YamatoPW History
Yamato Powertrain Warehouse has been doing quality remanufacturing for over 30 years. Today, YPW operates out of a 2.5 acre facility in Northwest Washington State, and is now North America’s largest remanufacturer of import engines, while also specializing in domestic gas and diesel engines, transmissions, transmission parts, a brake part line, cylinder heads and much more. YPW ships coast to coast across North America, with customers that include independent garages, fleets of all sizes and national automotive chain stores.
1978
The company has modest beginnings, as it begins remanufacturing engines and carburetors in an assembly line format, and local shops frequently refer customers to the only shop that has the tools and knowledge to work on import engines.
1989
The plant moves to Bellingham, WA in a new 25,000 sq.ft. manufacturing facility on Port of Bellingham land near the Bellingham International Airport. The business is now building about 800-900 Mazda rotary engines a year for ATK, and although the popularity of the rotary is on the downswing, it proves to be very good strategic move.
1992
As it becomes difficult to find good engine cores, it eventually spells the demise of Yamato's rotary engine business. The company needs two or three engines in order to build one, and it soon gets to the point where seven to eight engine cores are needed to make one engine. However, YPW is firmly entrenched in the business of remanufacturing Japanese engines, so they plow ahead, leaving the rotary engines behind.
1992-1999
YPW grew its distribution network and had warehouses in Seattle, Fresno, Denver, Atlanta, Boston, and Detroit. YPW serviced every major PER in the US and has sales of over 12,000 import engines per year.
1999
YPW is approached by Jasper to become their import engine remanufacturer. This is a big move for YPW, and they debate all the pros and cons. Soon, a decision is made, and a ten year partnership has begun.
1999-2000
YPW breaks ground on a new manufacturing facility. Today, the firm still occupies the 75,000 sq.ft. manufacturing facility, with state of the art production ergonomics and material flow. Yamato continues to use its original 25,000 sq.ft. facility for parts and engine warehousing. Soon, YPW is shipping almost 1,000 engines a month, each with a three-year, 100,000 mile warranty, primarily to Jasper.
2004
Company President Asiff Dhanani serves as President of the Production Engine Remanufacturers Association (PERA), the leading body of remanufacturing professionals in the world.
2005
YPW is voted by its peers as the Remanufacturer of the Year
2005 and 2006
YPW creates Jasper Engines & Transmissions Northwest, their first franchise sales dealership, selling the complete line of Jasper products, including domestic and import engines, diesels, stern drives, transmission and differentials. JET Northwest operates in Washington, Oregon, Montana, Idaho, Alaska and Western Canada. JET NW opens branch office in Seattle, WA. JET NW goes on to win the coveted “Presidents Award”.
2009
The original agreement with Jasper comes to an end. YPW decides to relinquish the franchise dealership back to Jasper, and forges ahead with plans to remanufacture a full line of powertrain products produced, packaged, sold and distributed under their own brand name. YPW has a commitment to the community and its employees to continue manufacturing its products in the State of WA.
2010
Yamato Powertrain Warehouse moves into a new era. While continuing to uphold their principles of an unwavering commitment to quality of product, processes and people, all products are now packaged and promoted under their own banner. YPW also moves ahead with plans to rewrite the rules regarding warranty and customer service programs, instituting policies such as their no-fault 1st time warranty, increased warranty labor rates, and adding in an 18 month warranty to complement the existing 3 year coverage. YPW now returns to its roots, and is able to offer its wide product line to the entire automotive industry.
